Settling in
Settling-in Services Netherlands
The paperwork ends and then the real questions begin. Which bank will open an account this week? Why are there three kinds of waste container? How does the GP system work, where do you buy a bike that will not be stolen by Friday, and what on earth is eigen risico? Settling in is a hundred small puzzles, and solving them alone takes months.
We compress those months into weeks. Banking, utilities, internet, phone, transport cards, insurance basics and a proper orientation of your new neighborhood, arranged with you and explained as we go. This kind of hands-on, personal settling-in is exactly why our clients call us a concierge rather than an agency.
Who this is for
- New arrivals who want their practical life running within the first weeks
- Busy professionals with no time to research Dutch providers
- Partners and families landing while the working spouse is already at the office
- Anyone who moved months ago and still feels half-arrived
The order things have to happen in
Dutch administration is a chain. Attempting step four before step two is why arrivals take months instead of weeks.
- Address first, then registration, then BSN. Nothing meaningful can be arranged before the BSN exists.
- DigiD, the national login, follows the BSN and is required for the tax office, healthcare and most government services.
- Most Dutch banks require a BSN and proof of address, though some accounts can be opened earlier with a passport alone.
- Health insurance must be taken within four months of registration and is backdated to arrival.
- Energy, water and internet contracts are in your name from the day the lease starts, and switching later carries notice periods.
- Exchanging a foreign driving licence is only possible for some countries, and only within a set period after registration.

What settling-in support costs
Tailor-made proposal
Settling in is the part of a move that is different for everyone, so it is priced to what you actually want handled. You receive one fixed quotation after the first conversation, not an hourly meter.
- Utilities, internet and municipal taxes arranged in your name
- Doctor, dentist and pharmacy registration
- Banking, DigiD and the Dutch admin that blocks everything else
- The practical orientation that turns an address into a neighbourhood
The things nobody tells you
Which bank should I choose?
It depends less on the bank than on what you need from it. Mortgage ambitions, business banking, an employer that pays from abroad and family in another currency all point to different answers. We open the account with you and make sure iDEAL, the payment method half the country runs on, works from day one.
Can I use my foreign driving licence?
EU and EEA licences remain valid. Licences from a number of other countries, including some US states, can be exchanged without a new test, but only within a limited window after registration and in some cases only if you hold the 30 percent ruling. Miss the window and you sit the full Dutch test. We check your situation early because this deadline is unforgiving.
How do I get a doctor, dentist and pharmacy?
You register with a GP practice near your address, and the practice assigns your pharmacy. Both fill up, so both are done in your first fortnight. Dentists take private patients directly and are easier, though good ones in the centre still have lists.
What about the tax office in year one?
Your first Dutch tax year is almost always worth filing even when you think nothing is owed, because arrival year filings frequently produce a refund. We are relocation consultants rather than tax advisers, so we introduce you to an adviser who handles expat returns rather than guessing on your behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a Dutch bank account before I have a BSN?
Some banks allow it and let you supply the BSN afterwards; policies change often. We know the current state of play and steer you to the fastest route so your salary has somewhere to land.
What is DigiD and do I really need it?
DigiD is your digital identity for the Dutch government: taxes, healthcare, allowances and municipal services all use it. You will need it constantly, and we set it up with you early.
We arrived months ago but never really settled. Is this still for us?
Absolutely, and it is more common than you think. We audit what is missing or set up wrongly, fix it, and finish the landing you never had time for.
Feel at home faster
Give us a few weeks and the Netherlands stops being a foreign country and starts being where you live.
