Until you have it, you are officially in limbo. Which is why it should be the very first thing handled after you arrive, and handled right the first time.

What is a BSN?
The BSN, burgerservicenummer, is your Dutch citizen service number. It is the single identifier the government, your employer, your bank, your insurer and your doctor all use to recognise you, and almost nothing in Dutch life proceeds without it.
You receive it by registering with a municipality, not by applying for it separately. That is why registration is the first practical task after arrival: a salary cannot be paid, health insurance cannot start and a bank account is difficult to open until the number exists.

What the municipality will ask for
The BSN is the key that turns every other lock. Almost every delay we see comes from one of the six points below.
- Registration is at the municipality of your address, and you must have an address where the landlord permits registration.
- Staying longer than four months means registration in the BRP. A shorter stay means the RNI register instead, at one of the designated municipalities.
- Bring your passport, your residence permit or MVV where applicable, and your rental contract.
- Foreign birth and marriage certificates must be legalised or carry an apostille, and be translated by a sworn translator.
- Appointments must usually be made in advance, and in Rotterdam waiting times run from a few days to several weeks depending on the season.
- Every family member needs their own appointment and their own documents, including children.

A BSN is issued through registration in the Personal Records Database, either as a resident or, for short stays, as a non-resident via an RNI desk. We advise which route fits your situation during intake.
Where BSN files go wrong
Why is legalisation such a problem?
A certificate that has not been legalised in the country of issue cannot be accepted, and the chain often runs through a local ministry and then a Dutch embassy. It can take weeks or months, and it cannot be started once you are already here. This is the single most common reason an arrival stalls, and it is the first thing we check.
Can I get a BSN without a Dutch address?
Yes, through the RNI register for non-residents, available at nineteen designated municipalities. It gives you a BSN so payroll and banking can start, but it is not residential registration, and you still register properly once you have your address.
What happens straight after the appointment?
Your BSN is usually issued on the spot or within a few days. It then unlocks the DigiD application, health insurance enrolment, a Dutch bank account and correct payroll. We work through that sequence with you rather than leaving you with a number and a list.
Do you come to the appointment with me?
Yes, that is the point of the service. Appointments run in Dutch, officials ask for documents that were not on the published list, and having someone beside you who knows the answer turns a second appointment into no second appointment.
Frequently asked questions
How fast can I get a BSN after arriving?
With documents prepared in advance, often within days of arrival; the number is usually issued at or shortly after the appointment itself. The real delays come from missing apostilles and appointment backlogs, which is precisely what we eliminate.
Do I need a permanent address to get a BSN?
You need a registerable address, which can be a temporary one if the provider permits registration. If you do not have that yet, we look at the RNI route or arrange short-stay housing where registration is allowed.
Can my whole family be registered at once?
Yes, and it is worth doing. We book a family appointment, prepare every certificate in advance and make sure children are registered correctly, which matters later for school enrollment and healthcare.
